Restricted Number

So it's 12:20am and I just got a call from "Restricted Number", but they hung up before I could answer. Now this just makes me start worrying: who would call me at 12:20am? Most of the people I know are on East Coast time, so it's ridiculously late for them - I can probably assume they're not calling. But still - someone's calling me really late at night and I can't call them back. I dunno - just makes me worry that someone's in trouble or something. Ah well - I should probably go to bed.

Also, there's a very, very loud party somewhere in my neighborhood, and I think I just saw the raccoons that kept me up a few nights ago skittering by my window. To think I meant to go to bed early tonight...

Suburban Wildlife

There are two screaming baby raccoons in my driveway right now, along with what I assume is their mother. The noises they make are bizarre - a kind of yodelling screech. It's keeping me awake. Very weird.

Baby Panda!

No pictures that I've found yet, but - still! Baby panda! That's the only thing that matters!

Terror in London

33 dead at least, hundreds injured in a series of bombings against London's public transportation system. The Brits are handling it pretty calmly, showing their experience with earlier terror attacks from the IRA and their extensive preparations, but it still hits hard and shocks me. One of the bombs went off on an Underground car between Russell Square and King's Cross, right near the British Museum. Ugh.

I've Been Exploited!

Some nasty little goblin managed to use an exploit that I didn't know about in awstats, the web stats app I'd been using, and got into my web host under my username. This little bugger proceeded to spam out about 32,000 emails. No, I'm not making that up - roughly 32,000. They started bouncing back this afternoon, at which point I realized something was very wrong and checked the server, finding a perl process running that really shouldn't have been. I eventually backtracked it to a series of illicit requests to awstats.pl and reported it all to my host provider, but needless to say, I'm annoyed.

Astrologer Sues NASA For Messing With The Stars

No, seriously! I'm not making this up! A Russian astrologer is suing NASA over the probe that was rammed into a comet over the weekend, for $300 million. The grounds for the suit? That the NASA probe's interference with the comet will mess up horoscopes. This is the greatest lawsuit EVER.

Intellectual Ancestry!

Thanks to the Mathematics Genealogy Project, I've been able to trace my aunt, through a chain of doctoral advisors - via a couple Bernoullis, Lagrange, Fourier, Euler, and other names I recognize from math classes - all the way back to Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz himself. This website is too much fun for a geek.
